First One’s the Hardest… June 27, 2007

Wow, the first post is always the hardest, I guess.  At least I hope so.  I’ve been waiting so long to start this blog, and right out of the gate I wanted to write something provocative, something insightful, something funny, and yet, all I can think about is getting on that British Airways flight tomorrow for my long-planned two week European vacation.  First stop, Madrid, one of my favorite cities in the world.  This will be my third time, and though the city in many ways reminds me of my hometown of Los Angeles, there is a vibrancy, an energy, a passion that never fails to ignite my creativity.  Of course, it could be the sangria.  I need something to ignite me because I will be doing rewrites on two TV pilots, BAILEY WEGGINS for Lifetime and THE GAYONIC MAN for Logo while I’m in Spain.  Couldn’t be avoided.  Oh, well.  I could be in LA doing the rewrites and not a nice hotel in the Madrid City Center.  Then, it’s two days in Athens before I meet my best friend Rob in Mykonos for another eight days of pure heaven–lying around with a good book, eating and drinking way too much, and explaining to all the Europeans I meet on the island, “No!  I did not vote for Bush!  Not all Americans believe in what he’s doing!  In fact, right now, only 28% of us think we’re on the right track!  So stop slamming my people and let me buy you a drink!”  That usually works.  A couple of cocktails, and pretty soon this virulently Anti-American Spaniard or Greek has his arm slung around me, with his glass raised, and we’re both singing the chorus to ABBA’s “Dancing Queen” with the rest of the bar (gives you a hint of the kind of bars I hang out in).  It’s no secret the Anti-American sentiment is at an all time high abroad right now given our failing foreign policies.  So I’m making it my personal mission to embark on another Goodwill Tour as I have on every overseas trip I’ve taken since Bush stole, ahem, won the election in 2000.  Wish me luck.  Hey, how about that?  I slid a political statement right into my first post.
